Yes guys, Broadband Helper has received some loving today, as I have given it a complete revamp and have upgraded the software that powers the site.

The new look is a lot sleeker and hopefully makes the site feel more modern and easy to use. As usual, comments and feedback are welcome in the relevant section of the forums.

As always, sections of the site will still look a little bit odd (the articles is an example), i'm still working on that so expect to see some oddities around the site, I'll update here once I've fully completed rolling out the new look.

Enjoy!

COMPLETED: Notification of Site Downtime

This is an advance warning that Broadband Helper will be taken offline on Tuesday 5th July 2011 from 10:00 to allow our host to migrate our server to another datacentre in London (due to issues at it's current Datacentre).

We anticipate the the downtime will last around 3 to 4 hours, however this may take longer to due DNS propagation around the internet as we'll have to change our site's IP Addresses.

We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause to our users.

UPDATE: We're pleased to announce that the migration has been completed and IP/DNS changes seems to have propagated.

COMPLETED: Notification of Site Downtime

Hey everyone, just a bit of an advanced warning to say that I shall be taking the site offline for server maintenance on Monday 20th December at around 12:00pm (GMT). The downtime should last no longer than 2 hours.

During the downtime i'll be updating the backend software (PHP, Apache, MySQL, etc) on the server and installing any updates for the Linux distro the server is running.

During the downtime the site 'may' appear to be online, so I'd strongly recommend that you wait before posting anything new to the website. I'll post another announcement once the maintenance has been completed.

Net providers get Digital Economy Act judicial review

Quote

TalkTalk and BT have been granted judicial review of the Digital Economy Act by the High Court. A judge will now scrutinise whether the act is legal and justifiable, and could make wide-ranging recommendations.

BT and TalkTalk argued that the legislation had been "rushed through parliament" before the election. Internet service providers (ISPs) are unhappy with the part of the act that requires them to take action against suspected illegal file-sharers.

Depending on the judge's ruling, the government may be forced to change or even scrap the legislation.

More debate

Andrew Heaney, director of strategy and regulation at TalkTalk said he was "very pleased" that the High Court had recognised the concerns of ISPs.

"The act was rushed through parliament in the 'wash-up' with only 6% of MPs attending the brief debate and has very serious flaws," he said.

During the parliamentary debate about the Digital Economy bill, held in the final days before the parliament was dissolved before May's general election, some MPs complained that it needed more debate because of its complex nature.

"The provisions to try and reduce illegal file-sharing are unfair, won't work and will potentially result in millions of innocent customers who have broken no law suffering and having their privacy invaded," said Mr Heaney.

He called on the government to put the legislation "on hold" pending the enquiry.

A judge will conduct a full review in February, considering whether the parts of the act that deal with illegal file-sharing are in breach of the e-commerce directive, which rules that ISPs cannot be held liable for traffic on their networks. The act will also be measured against EU privacy and technical standards legislation.

One of the most controversial elements of the law relates to tougher penalties for people who download music, films and other content without paying. ISPs will be required to send letters to people identified as net pirates, with persistent offenders being added to a blacklist.

Misconceived

The BPI, which represents the UK music industry, has been campaigning for action to tackle online copyright infringement.

"It's disappointing that a couple of ISPs are trying to frustrate this and resist any action being taken to reduce illegal file-sharing on their networks," said a BPI spokesman.

"We continue to believe that their case is misconceived and will fail. The act remains in full force and we will continue to work with government, Ofcom and other stakeholders to implement it," he added.

Ofcom has been working on a final code of practice for how the process of monitoring file-sharing will work in the UK. It has the power to slow down the net connections of persistent pirates or even cut them off completely, although such measures would not come into force until at least 2012.

A caveat added at the last minute stipulated that new legislation and several rounds of consultation would be required before such a course of action was taken. A spokeswoman for the regulator said it was "business as usual" as far as the code of practice was concerned.

The regulator is expected to publish its final code later this week. Last month the High Court in Ireland ruled that laws cutting off internet users who have illegally downloaded content cannot be enforced in the country.

New Users and Spam Users

Unfortunately we have recently been the victim of a spam attack where spammers from certain countries have decided to register on the site filling their profile with useless information and links to dodgy websites.

I have today cleared these accounts from the site, however in doing so I may have inadvertently removed some genuine user accounts. If this is the case then please feel free to register and accept my apologies for deleting your account. If you are re-registering and are experiencing problems in doing so, then please let a Broadband Helper team member know and we'll do whatever we can to assist you.

While doing the above "maintenance" I have noticed we have quite a number of genuine new users registered on to the site, may I be the first to welcome you all to our small community, and that you can feel free to ask any questions you may have.

I know the site may look quiet, but rest assured there are a number of us active on here who will help you as much as possible.

As for the spam attack, please be rest assured that it was not a hacking attempt to obtain user data from our server (which is stored securely on our server). If you have any questions please feel free to ask them!

ADSL Helper is now Broadband Helper

Hello, and welcome to Broadband Helper!

That's right, ADSL Helper has now changed it's name to Broadband Helper. There are many reasons we have done this, some have been listed below:

Most people refer to their internet connection as a broadband connection instead of an ADSL connection, some people don't even know what ADSL is.

Broadband is easier to understand and while hopefully help us on search engine

We don't solely focus on ADSL, we have sections for Cable and Mobile Broadband.

The new URL for the website is www.broadbandhelper.co.uk, however if you have bookmarks and/or links for our old URL (www.adslhelper.co.uk), don't fret, as it will continue to work.

As the domain is new, there maybe a few hiccups around the site while the internet updates it's DNS records, this is normal behavior and affects most websites that make similar changes. However if issues do persist, please inform us via the Comments and Suggestions forum, thanks.

Thank you for your continued patience.

We are very pleased to announce that ADSL Helper is changing it's name to Broadband Helper.

We are doing this for a number of reasons:

The change is expected to take place over the bank holiday (monday) and may mean the site may be inaccessible for a small period, however we aim for this to be very minimal.

The new URL for the website will be www.broadbandhelper.co.uk, however if you have bookmarks and/or links for our current URL (www.adslhelper.co.uk), don't fret, as they will continue to work after the change.

Once the change has been completed we will post an announcement stating so.
