How To Remove The Ring Wire
Aug 30 2010 21:00 | Ashley in Broadband
This is a simple How-To guide on removing the ring wire for phone extensions from the master socket. Doing this can help improve the speed of your broadband connection as the ring wire can act like an antenna and cause interference on the line.
By following this guide, you are doing so at your own risk, Broadband Helper will not be held liable for any damage to you, your equipment, the BT cables, BT master socket and phone extensions.
Now that's out of the way, let's proceed.
If you have the new style NTE5 socket:
1. Remove both screws from either side of the bottom half and pull gently.
2. Remove any wires that are attached to terminal 3 on the back of the faceplate (The Bell/Ring Wire is usually Orange and White and attached in the middle).
3. Screw the faceplate back onto the master socket.
If you have the old style master socket:
1. Find the first (aka master) socket that enters your property. When you unscrew the front it will have a capacitor inside. Like in the pictures above.
2. Remove any wires attached to terminals 4, 6, 1 and 3 (the top and bottom on both sides, only the middle connections 2 and 5 should have anything attached).
3. Screw the socket back in.
